De profundis – Out of the Depths

Out of the depths I have cried to Thee O Lord! Lord, hear my voice. Let Thine ears be attentive to the voice of my supplication. If Thou, O Lord! wilt mark iniquities: Lord, who shall stand it? For with Thee there is mercy: and by reason of Thy law I have waited on Thee, O Lord! My soul hath relied on His word: my soul hath hoped in the Lord. From the morning watch even until night: let Israel hope in the Lord. For with the Lord there is mercy; and with Him plentiful Redemption. And He will redeem Israel from all his iniquities. Eternal rest give unto them, O Lord! And let perpetual light shine upon them. May they rest in peace. Amen. Lord, hear my prayer. And let my cry come unto Thee. The Lord be with you. Let us pray: O God, Creator and Redeemer of all the faithful, grant the souls of Your servants the remission of all their sins, that they may obtain, through our humble prayers, the forgiveness they have always expected from Your mercy. You being God, who liveth and reigneth with God the Father, in the unity of the Holy Ghost for ever and ever. Amen.

For the faithful departed

Prayer of the Church O God, who loves to forgive men and to save them, we beg Your mercy, through the intercession of the ever-virgin Blessed Mary and all the Saints. May all those who have come out of this world, especially our parents and benefactors, be admitted to the participation of eternal beatitude. We ask this through Jesus Christ Our Lord. Amen.

Universal Prayer

Pour out, Lord, Your blessings on the Father of Christianity, on my parents, my benefactors, my friends, and my enemies. Protect all those whom You have given me as masters, both spiritual and temporal. Help the poor, the prisoners, the afflicted, the travelers, the sick and the dying. Convert the heretics and enlighten the infidels. God of goodness and mercy, have pity also on the souls of the faithful who are in Purgatory. Put an end to their sufferings, and give to those for whom I am obliged to pray, rest and eternal light. Amen.

Surrender to the Will of God

All I know is that nothing will happen to me that You have not foreseen, settled and ordained from all eternity. That is enough for me, O my God! It is enough for me. I worship Your eternal and impenetrable designs, and I submit to them with all my heart for Your love. I want everything, I accept everything, I make a sacrifice of everything to You, and I unite this sacrifice with that of Jesus Christ, my divine Savior. I ask You, in His Name and by His infinite merits, for patience in my sorrows, and for the perfect submission that is due to You for everything You want or allow. Amen.

Acceptance of Death

Lord, my God, from this day on, I accept from Your hand, with resignation and with a good heart, the kind of death that You will please to send me with all its sorrows, its anguish and its pains.

To ask for Resignation which obtains Heaven

O Saints of Paradise, who now behold this divine Lamb, glorious, unchanging, and immortal, and who possess Him with the assurance of never losing Him, cast your gaze upon me, and have mercy on this poor exile. Obtain for me the grace to be crucified with Jesus Christ on earth, and to be crowned by Him in Heaven.

To ask for a good Death

by Saint Alphonsus Liguori O Mary my Sovereign, O my Mother, by the merits of the sorrow You experienced when You saw, before Your eyes, your Son enduring such cruel sufferings, bowing His head and exhaling on the Cross, I beg You to obtain for me a good death. Amen.

Act of Contrition

O my God, I am heartily sorry for having offended Thee, and I detest all my sins because of Thy just punishments, but most of all because they offend Thee, my God, who art all good and deserving of all my love. I firmly resolve with the help of Thy grace to sin no more and to avoid the near occasion of sin. Amen.

To Prepare for a good death

My God, I know I will die; perhaps I have only a few moments to live. Perhaps I will not get out of the bed where I will lie tonight, so You warn me to enter it as if I were in my tomb. I know, Lord, that at the hour of my death I would like to have lived without sin and to have always loved You. Put me now in these holy dispositions. Yes, my God, I hate sin, I believe all that the Church teaches me, I put all my hope in You, I want to live and die in Your love. I commend to You my soul which has cost You so much, O my God. Do not allow the precious Blood You shed for it to be useless. Blessed Virgin, Mother of my God, my Mother and my Patroness, my good Guardian Angel, my Patron Saint, all the Saints of Paradise, intercede for me, pray for me, during this night, all the time of my life and especially at the hour of my death. Amen.
