Salve Regina, or Hail Holy Queen

This beautiful prayer to Mary, officially sung before the 12th century, was enriched by St. Bernard, who added the last three exclamations: “O clement, O loving, O sweet Virgin Mary.”

Hail, holy Queen,

Mother of mercy, our life, our sweetness and our hope!
To Thee do we cry, poor banished children of Eve,
to Thee do we send up our sighs, mourning and weeping in this valley of tears.
Turn then, most gracious Advocate, Thine eyes of mercy towards us,
and after this our exile, show unto us the blessed fruit of Thy womb, Jesus,
O clement, O loving, O sweet Virgin Mary!

V/ Pray for us, O holy Mother of God.
R/ That we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.

Let us pray: Almighty and eternal God, who through the cooperation of the Holy Ghost, didst prepare the body and soul of the glorious Virgin Mother Mary to be a fit dwelling-place for Thy Son, as we celebrate Her memory with joy, grant that through Her motherly intercession, we may be preserved from evil in this world and from eternal death. Through the same Christ, our Lord.
R/ Amen.
