Saint Augustine and the child.
The following story is told about Saint Augustine: The holy doctor had been meditating on the mystery of the Holy Trinity for a long time and hoped to understand it one day. Once, while he was walking by the sea, he saw a child playing with a shell and pouring sea water into a small hole he had dug. St. Augustine observed him for a moment, then approached him and said, “Dear child, what are you doing here? – I want to pour the sea into this little hole. – That’s impossible,” said the bishop, smiling. “You will never succeed!” But the child, who was nothing but an angel, answered him, “It would be easier for me to pour the whole sea into this hole, than for a human being to delve into the mystery of the Holy Trinity.”
A wonderful flower.
Dr. Sameléder de Cordoba discovered in Mexico a flower of oriental origin called “Hibiscus mutabilis.” This extraordinary flower is white in the morning, red in the afternoon and blue towards evening. It exhales an exquisite perfume, but only around noon. It is widespread in all the isthmus of Tehuantepek, especially along the coast.
This three-colored flower has some resemblance to the Holy Trinity. Whether it shines in white, red or blue, it is one and the same flower. Likewise, the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit are one and the same God.
