The Protestant and the Bible.
A Catholic and a Protestant were once discussing tradition. The latter claimed that all revelation is contained in the Bible, that tradition is useless and worthless. “Well!” replied the Catholic, “fetch me your Bible and I will immediately show you that tradition is necessary.” The Protestant having done so, his contradicter flipped through it and said, “Sir, I asked you for the Holy Books and not this collection of fables. – But,” replied the other, “this is the Bible. – Who tells you that these are the Holy Books? – Who? I know it from my father, from my ancestors, who for centuries have always considered this book to be divine. – So this is the tradition that you do not want to admit!”
– St. Augustine was right, then, to say, “I would not believe in the Scriptures if the authority of the Church did not guarantee their authenticity.”
