For the Good Shepherd of the Church

Jesus establishes His Church on Peter
It is on Peter that Jesus established His Church. To him He entrusted the keys of His Kingdom, with the power to bind and unbind. It was to Peter that Jesus made this solemn promise: “The gates of hell shall not prevail against My Church.”

Lord Jesus, who are one God with the Father and the Holy Spirit; who are the only and invisible Head of the Church; who, among Your apostles, chose St. Peter to be the unique Shepherd of Your sheep, and who wished to have as His sole Vicar on earth the Pontiff of Your Church, to whom every Christian must turn with submission and love; I beg You, Lord, to protect our beloved Pontiff, to defend him against his enemies, to fill him with Your graces and to keep him in Your Church. May he lead us, O my God, to follow him in the way of true religion; and may the weak merits of our faith receive, thanks to him, a happy increase every day; so that, like faithful sheep, we may arrive happily at the heavenly fold following our first Shepherd. Amen.
