Novena to Our Lady of the Assumption
by St. Alphonsus Liguori

Our Lady of the Assumption

The novena begins on August 6.

Let us ask especially for the virtue of the General Detachment with the intention of preparing ourselves for death.

Recite 9 Hail Marys and the following prayer each day:

O sweetest Sovereign, beloved Mother, You have left the earth! You have entered Your kingdom, where You rule as Queen over all the choirs of angels. We know very well that miserable sinners such as ourselves were not worthy to possess You in this valley of darkness; but we also know that Your greatness has not made You forget our misery, and that in the midst of so much glory, Your compassion, far from diminishing, has increased for us, poor children of Adam. From the height of this sublime throne where You reign, turn Your merciful eyes towards us, O Mary, and have pity on us; remember that when You left this world, You promised to remember us. Ah, look upon us and come to our aid: see how many storms and perils we shall be constantly exposed to until the end of our lives. By the merits of your blessed death, obtain for us holy perseverance in the friendship of God, so that we may one day go to kiss your feet in paradise, and unite our voices with those of the heavenly spirits to praise You, and to sing Your glories as You deserve.
Amen.

Share with those who are dear to you

Sign of the Cross

In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost, and of the Mother of God. Amen.

Preparatory Prayer

O Jesus! We are going to walk with You on the road to Calvary which was so painful for You. Make us understand the greatness of Your sufferings, touch our hearts with tender compassion at the sight of Your torments, in order to increase in us the regret of our faults and the love we wish to have for You.
Deign to apply to all of us the infinite merits of Your Passion, and in memory of Your sorrows, show mercy to the souls in Purgatory, especially to those who are most abandoned.
O Divine Mary, who first taught us to make the Way of the Cross, obtain for us the grace to follow Jesus with the sentiments Your Heart was filled with as You accompanied Him on the road to Calvary. Grant that we may weep with You, and that we may love Your divine Son as You do. We ask this in the name of His adorable Heart. Amen.
