For the Preservation of the Deposit of the Faith
For the Kingdom of God to come!
A fervent Christian from Paris, very zealous for the relief of the faithful departed, was working for the conversion of an old man who was dangerously ill; he had exhausted all his exhortations and prayers to urge him to settle the affairs of his conscience and to receive the sacraments of the Church. The thought came to him to interest the souls in purgatory in the salvation of this hardened moribund. He undertook to have a certain number of masses said for the deliverance of the most neglected soul, on the condition that this soul in turn would take it upon itself to obtain for the sick man the grace of repentance. The same day, this poor sinner, so close to eternal loss, asked to see a priest; he fulfilled the duties of a good Christian; and, a short time later, he died in the sentiments of the most sincere penitence.
