And then?
A student, Francesco Spazzara, came one day to Saint Philip of Neri (d. 1595) to ask him for assistance. The Saint granted him and asked him what career he wanted to pursue. “That of a lawyer,” answered the young man. – And after that? – My eloquence will earn me money. – And then? – I will find a worthy wife and get married. – And then? – I will have children and they will make me happy and proud. – And then? – I will settle my children and see my grandchildren. – And after that? – When I am old, I will retire and live comfortably. – And then?” The student became gloomy and answered: “Then? I will have to die. – And then?” replied the Saint. The young man fell silent and went away sad and thoughtful. The Saint’s question never ceased to haunt his thoughts, and he became a virtuous and pious man.
– Many men do not think about their destiny. And yet… this destiny is eternal.
