The hotelier and the receipt.
A French senator once wanted to rent an apartment in a Paris hotel, and was asked to pay the price in advance. “Do you want a receipt?” said the hotel owner. “If you believe in God,” replied the senator, “that is not necessary. – But do you seriously believe in God?” said the other ironically. “Of course I do. I think you believe in it too. – No, I don’t. – In that case, give me a receipt.”
The incredulous barber.
A barber sought to create a clientele among his fellow believers of the free thought: so he did not miss any opportunity to show himself as a man who did not believe in God or in the hereafter. One day, however, he was talking to the wrong person. Having once again shown his ideas to a customer, the latter said to him: “I would not entrust my dog, let alone my throat, to a man who does not believe in God.”
He then left the salon and was never seen again.
– They were right, people without faith are too often people without conscience.
