The proof of the existence of God in the gusset.
Balmes, the great Spanish thinker, sometimes joked that he carried the proof of the existence of God in his vest. He was talking about his watch. His joke contained the following reasoning: My watch with its cogs requires a worker, a skilled watchmaker.
All the more reason why an infinite intelligence was needed for the great machine of the stars that moves in the firmament with such precision.
The bench in the forest.
Two friends, one of whom was unbelieving, made an excursion into the forest one day, and after walking a long way, sat down on a bench to rest. “See,” said the believing friend to his companion, “these four stakes driven into the ground and the board nailed to them. Will you pretend that this bench organized for sitting is self-made or that it has grown like a mushroom? Obviously it was the work of a craftsman who by the arrangement of the parts wanted to achieve the goal conceived in his mind. If such a simple thing presupposes a mind, all the more reason do the human body, this so marvelous organism, the plants, the animals, require a sovereignly wise Being who has adapted them to their end.”
From the harmony of the human body and all of nature, we must conclude to a supreme Creator.
